2011 14U Perfect Game BCS National
Champions
14u BCS title belongs to Titans
Published: Thursday, July 07, 2011
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The East Cobb
Titans 14u squad entered the playoffs of the Perfect Game
14u BCS Finals with
the No. 4 seed and a somewhat
modest 4-1-1 record.
The Titans went on to prove
they’re anything but modest when it comes to winning
championships.
Armed with an ability to come back
from early deficits and a tradition of winning that is
inherent in the East Cobb Baseball program, the Titans
rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to
salvage a 7-6 victory over No. 7 seed
Boca Thunder Baseball in the
championship game of the Finals on a rainy Thursday at City
of Palms Park.
The Titans (8-1-1) also rallied
from a 3-1-1 start to the tournament, winning their last
five games en route to
their first 14u BCS Finals
championship.
“This is the second year we’ve
brought a team down here and it’s a great tournament and I
love being down
here,” head coach Tim Ayers said
after his squad accepted the championship trophy and banner.
“The kids
love being down here and it was
good for them. They love playing in a big stadium – they
were talking about
how much better could it be than
being at an event like this and playing in a big stadium.”
At the conclusion of the
tournament, Titans right-hander Matthew Olson was named the
Most Valuable
Pitcher after (unofficially)
pitching 11 2/3 innings in two games and giving up seven
hits with a 1.85 ERA and
10 strikeouts. The Thunder’s
Joshua Parker was named the Most Valuable Player after
batting .458 (11-for-24)
with 10 RBI and 17 runs scored.
He also pitched well, striking out 12 in 12 innings pitched.
The Thunder jumped to an early
lead with two runs in the top of the first but the Titans
came right back
with four in the bottom of the
frame.
It remained 4-2 until the Thunder
pushed across a run in the top of the sixth, but the Titans
seemed to take
control in the bottom of the
inning when they scored twice on a deep sacrifice fly from
big Marcus Mitchel
l (5-10, 200) and an RBI single
from Logan Peterson.
With a 6-3 lead heading into the
top of the seventh, the Titans probably felt secure, but
Evan Schaffner
came up with a big two-run double
that tied the game at 6 in the top of the seventh.
The first two Titans couldn’t
reach, but Malcolm Boyce came up with a two-out single,
Landon Faulkner
drilled a two-out double, and
Matthew Broadhead delivered the game-winning RBI single as
the rain picked
up in intensity.
“You have to give credit to the
Thunder,” Ayers said. “We were up three and we had our best
pitcher on
the mound (right-hander Faulkner)
and we really thought he was going to shut them down. They
did a good
job of fighting back and coming
back.
“But getting the bases loaded and
Matthew Broadhead coming up with that base-hit was big for
us.”
The Titans were use to coming back
from early deficits.
“(Wednesday night in the
quarterfinals) we went down 2-0 and this morning in the
semis) we went down
3-0 and both times we came back
and answered,” Ayers said. “All we kept telling them was
‘pitch-by-pitch,
it’s a long game, so win each
pitch.’ They did and we came out winning.”
Jabin Smith was 3-for-4 with a
double, a triple and one run scored for the Titans in the
title tilt. Boyce was
2-for-3 and scored three runs,
Brayden Graham was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two
runs, and Mitchell
finished 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Michael Spooner was 2-for-3 with a
double and triple, two RBI and a run scored for the Thunder.
The Titans have been together for
a year now, since they were 13-year-olds. Big things are
always expected
from the teams in the massive East
Cobb Baseball organization, but this BCS Finals championship
might have
been a bit of a surprise.
“One of the coaches back at East
Cobb called me and said, ‘If you would have told me back in
January that
you were going to be playing in
(the championship game) of the Finals, I would have told you
you were crazy.’
They’ve worked hard since January
and they’ve done exactly what they’ve needed to do to win.
All the
credit goes to those guys – they
did what they needed to do.”
The East Cobb Titans 14u reached
the championship game by beating the No. 13 seeded Tampa
Suns, 9-1, in
the first round of the playoffs
and knocking off No. 5 Meteors Baseball, 12-3, in the
quarterfinals. It was a
family feud when the Titans beat
the ninth-seeded East Cobb Tigers 14u, 10-9, in Thursday’s
semifinal round.
Olson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and
a run scored, Mitchell 2-for-4 with five RBI and two runs
scored and Smith
1-for-3 with two RBI and a run
scored in the win over the Tigers.

Sam Bragg, a junior righthander for Wheeler High, Marietta,
Ga., was untouchable in the first 4 2/3 innings of his latest
start. Against Campbell High of Smyrna, Ga. on Wednesday night,
Bragg retired the first 14 batters he faced via the strikeout.
"In my 29 years as a head coach at Wheeler, this was the most
dominant performance I have witnessed," Dave McDonald said.
"Location was perfect on all pitches, with a fastball at 89-90
mph, breaking pitches and a straight changeup kept hitters off
balance the entire seven innings."
He finished the game with 17 strikeouts while allowing just
four hits and one walk. On Monday he threw two innings of relief
against Milton (Ga.) High, striking out five and allowing two
hits, giving him 22 strikeouts in nine innings this week.
The record for consecutive strikeouts in a game is 22, set by
Jim Peterson of Sonora, Calif. in 1973.

14U Titans Win Season Opening Triple Crown Spring
Frost
The Triple Crown Spring Frost
Tournament hosted at ECB was true to its name during the
weekend of February 26-28. Cold weather proved to be as
tough an opponent as any of the teams the Titans faced on their
way to being crowned champs of their season opening
tournament. Tournament MVP honors went to center fielder, Matt
"Mullet" McGuire, who led off for the Titans and batted .750
plus for the weekend. Heavy lumber notoriety also goes to
Michael Chavis for the team's inaugural bomb on field 3 in game
#1 on Friday night, and to Thomas "Leap-Year" Gaines, who
celebrated his birthday on Sunday in game #3 with a blast on
field 2 that may still be rolling around in the Kell High
School parking lot.
The Titans managed to keep
their parents on edge in the bleachers during most of the
tournament and the semi-final game was no exception. Eli
Sepnieski pitched 5 outstanding innings, when without
warning, a tough EC Stallions came to bat with bases loaded, one
out and trailing by only one in the bottom of the seventh.
In an exciting finish, the Titans rolled a 6-4-3
(Datoc-Cancelliere-Desmond) double play to seal the win,
securing their chance to vie for the hardware by taking on
favored Paulding County Vipers in the championship game.
"There is one thing that you
have done this weekend that they (Paulding County Vipers) have
not," Coach Beam was heard telling his players in the pre-game
huddle, "and that's come from behind." Injuries plagued
the Titans with three strong offensive players sidelined, but
reminders from Coach Beam that "teams win ball games...not
players," proved to inspire a winning attitude. Once again
left to biting their fingernails in the stands, parents watched,
as the very capable-of-winning-in-the-eleventh-hour-Vipers came
to bat in the bottom of the seventh trailing by only one run.
Holding onto Coach Beam's pre-game sage morsels, "...they have
not come from behind," the Titans managed to grind out three
outs and a tournament championship, due in large part to
tenacious pitching by closer, Brandon Sattenfield, who struck
out two batters with runners in scoring position.
When asked to comment on the tournament, Coach Beam
had this to say: "I want to congratulate the guys that were
there this weekend as you over came a great deal of adversity
and found a way to win. While for Feb we played well, we are
still a long way away from being successful in June and July.
It is a long process with much work yet to be completed."

Titan Family mourns the lose of 2007 MVP BCS World Series
Champion Antonio Burke
Florida A&M Students hold vigil to remember friend Antonio
Burke
Florida A&M students gathered Friday night to mourn the
death of fellow student, Antonio Burke. A candlelight vigil
was held in honor of the former baseball player Friday
night.
Family members could not be reached for details
regarding his death. A cause of death has not been
officially released.
Burke, 20, was an outfielder for the Rattler baseball
team during the 2008-2009 season. The Atlanta native had
plans to return to Tallahassee in the fall and play for
Florida State University.
The candle light vigil took place at the FAMU baseball
field at 7 p.m. Not even 19-degree weather could keep
students from paying tribute to one of their own. Students
huddled together in attempt to keep warm as well as comfort
one another in this time of sorrow.
Joseph Agboola, 21, a third-year graphic design student,
England led the memorial service.
“He was a Rattler and students would want to come out and
show support,” Agboola said.
Student Body Vice President Calvin Hayes, 21, a public
relations student from Orlando opened the service.
“We all may not be able to hit a home run, but we know
how to run home to haven when it is time,” Hayes said. “Time
like these come to teach lessons and unify our student
body…we all may not be able to hit a home run, but we know
how to run home to heaven when it is time.”
Fellow baseball players, campus organizations, clubs and
students who never had the opportunity to meet Burke, were
all in attendance to show support.
Burke’s friends were given a segment to speak and
reminisce on memories of Burke.
Dominique Key, 20, a junior biology student from Orlando
said Antonio had a great sense of humor, which always kept
her smiling.
“He was so funny, always had me laughing, he always
cracked jokes whether it was about me, or something else,”
said Key. “He was just always fun to be around. Every
time he would see me he would give me big hug and just make
me feel loved.”
Devin Iverson, 20, a second-year public relations student
from Atlanta, said Burke had a desire to make everyone
happy.
“Antonio always focused on the positive side of life,”
Iverson said. “My brother was a good student and an even
greater baseball player. There weren’t many days that went
by that he didn’t do something to perfect his craft.”
Iverson said she met Burke in her seventh biology class
and they remained friends for eight years.
“I will miss him as my big brother figure in my life…he
always looked out for me,” Iverson added. “I am proud to say
I knew Antonio and his memory will make me smile forever.”
Steven Pargett, 20, a third-year marketing student from
Los Angeles said the vigil opened his eyes to the
significance of life.
“What this said to me is that it is important for us to
be living our dreams today and celebrate life everyday,”
Pargett said.
Memorial services for Burke will be held at the Faith
Cathedral, 212 Riverside Pkwy., in Austell, Ga., on Jan. 15
at 11 a.m.

and defeated them also. They had timely hitting good
defense, with a good mixture of pitching and beat a VERY
Strong 13 Year old Astros Team, it took 9.5 innings to win
this Championship and the win was a total team effort. All
of the players need to be congratulated on their efforts.

The freshman hit .667 with 11 RBI
last weekend
March 23, 2009
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Georgia Tech third baseman
Matt Skole has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball
Player of the Week, while Duke's Andrew Wolcott was recognized
as the league's Pitcher of the Week for the period of March
15-22.
Skole, a freshman from Woodstock, Ga., went 10-for-15 (.667)
with three home runs and 11 RBI in last weekend's three-game
series at Virginia Tech. Skole's three-run homer highlighted a
six-run ninth-inning comeback in the Yellow Jackets' 10-9 win
over the Hokies in the series opener.
Skole also posted a career-high four hits, including his
second home run of the series, in Saturday's game. He then added
another three-run homer in the fourth inning of Sunday's series
finale, which was the hit that gave the Yellow Jackets the lead
for keeps. Skole finished that game 4-for-5 with five RBI.
For the week, Skole compiled slugging percentage of 1.043 in
the five games, helping Georgia Tech to a 4-1 record. He batted
.565 (13-for-23) with three homers, two doubles and 12 RBI. A
true freshman that has started every game at third base this
season, Skole currently leads the team in homers (7) and stands
second on the squad with a .389 batting average and in RBI (25).
Duke's Wolcott beat his second straight top-10 opponent
Saturday after holding No. 1 North Carolina to one earned run
over seven complete innings. Wolcott held the Tar Heels
scoreless for his first six innings before allowing two unearned
runs in the bottom of the seventh. The unearned runs ended a
streak of 15 consecutive scoreless innings.
Georgia Tech will return to action this week when it hosts
Georgia State (Tuesday, 6 p.m.) and No. 1 Georgia (Wednesday, 7
p.m.) for a pair of midweek contests. The Yellow Jackets will
then travel to Coral Gables, Fla., to face No. 4 Miami for a
three-game ACC series beginning Friday at 7 p.m. All five games
this week will be televised.
Matt Skole had three homers and two
doubles in five games last week.

The Titans are a select travel team playing as part of the East Cobb Baseball Association, which was founded in 1985. Since that time, 130 East Cobb teams have won national championships. East Cobb Baseball was named "The Most Outstanding Youth Baseball Program in the Nation" by Baseball America Magazine for the decade of the 90's. The main focus of the East Cobb Titans and the entire East Cobb Program is total player development with an emphasis on preparing players for baseball (and life) beyond.
Accountability and Responsibility always come before winning!
East Cobb Baseball has been instrumental in obtaining hundreds of collegiate baseball scholarships from more than 100 different collegiate programs for it's players since its inception. Unlike many other select travel baseball teams, the Titans team is coached and operated by experienced non-parent, ex-collegiate and professional athletes who do not have sons on the team.
The Titan program started in 2003, when Chance Beam joined the East Cobb program after moving to Atlanta from Knoxville where he coached at Carson Newman University. The Titans also possess a very experienced and talented assistant coaching staff including Assistant Coach Todd Harris, click on the "Coaches Corner" link in the Menu.
